JoeBrenceJoseph Brence, DPT is a Physical Therapist and clinical researcher from Pittsburgh, Pa. He is also a fellowship candidate with Sports Medicine of Atlanta. Joseph’s primary clinical interests involve a better understanding of the neuromatrix and determining how it applies to Physical Therapy practice. He is currently involved in a wide range of clinical research projects investigating topics such as the effects of verbalizing of pain, the effects of mobilizing vs. manipulating the spine on body image perception and validation of a instrument which will assess medical practitioners understanding of pain. FrancoisPrizinskiGrowing up in Morgantown West Virginia, Francois attended a Physical Therapy program at WVU graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Master’s Degree in 2005. He attended Temple University for his Doctorate Degree in Physical Therapy in 2006. During this time he placed an emphasis in the area of orthopaedics and attained recognition by the American Physical Therapy Association as a Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopaedics in 2007. Practicing in the Pittsburgh area since 2005, Francois has placed greater emphasis on the study of orthopaedic manual therapy. He enrolled in Sports Medicine of Atlanta’s Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship Program, which allowed him to specialize in Medical Screening, and attained Certification in Direct Access Physical Therapy as well as Australian based Orthopaedic Manual Therapy. Being Fellowship trained in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy, Francois will attain recognition from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Therapists in late 2012. Francois is one of a very few physical therapists with the type of training and credentials which allows him to solve movement based problems in a very successful manner. Francois diagnoses movement dysfunctions of the spine and extremities, and he retrains faulty and compensated movement patterns. He often refers to himself as the “movement guy.” Francois joined The Orthopedic Group team in 2012 to collaborate with our Sports & Spine Care Division. Francois lives in the South Hills of Pittsburgh with his wife and son. He enjoys spending time with his family, exercising, and reading research. Francois’ current research interest is in clinical reasoning and outcomes.

Postpartum Women – The Importance of the 3 Stages of Physical Therapy Treatment after Childbirth

When Pain is Primary Problem, Treating Pain Should Be Primary Focus

  • Assess the patient for movement difficulties, and or painful movement.
  • Tell the patient you will not hurt them with the treatment, but that you’re going to look for a sore spot.
  • Consider the likely direction the likely cutaneous nerve is disseminating.
  • Land carefully, gently. Wait for the nervous system to accept your hands.
  • Locate a sore spot (indicates secondary hyperalgesia in this treatment model) with one hand.
  • Draw skin away from that spot, slowly, with other hand. Tenderness will decrease or disappear. Tissue will soften.
  • Hold for at least 2 minutes, each spot.
  • Let go slowly. Ask patient to stand up, retest active movement.

JarodCarterDr Jarod Carter PT, DPT, MTC attended The University of Texas where he was a Diver on the National Champion UT Swimming and Diving Team. After graduating with High Honors in Kinesiology, he attended The University of St. Augustine, due to its reputation as a leader in Manual Therapy training. In 2005, he earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy, and graduated Valedictorian of his class.
